Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Classic to Post Classic period, ca. 500 to 1200 CE. A hand-carved red volcanic stone figure, stylized and seated with his arms crossed over his chest in low relief - as if giving himself a hug. This ancestor or deity is in a characteristic stance - poses and postures in Maya iconography are highly symbolic and convey meaning and status - yet some remain elusive. Crossed arms are widely represented and may indicate submission, and the crossed arms with hands resting on opposite shoulders perhaps had an even more specific meaning. If this a sign of submission - the figure may be accepting a message, or a fate handed down by deities or a ruler. Similar volcanic stone sculptures also posed with arms crossed can be found in El Baul and Bilbao archeological sites in Guatemala. Size: 5.5" L x 3.5" W x 7.5" H (14 cm x 8.9 cm x 19 cm)
