Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Late Classic, ca. 550 to 900 CE. Hand-carved from a long, human bone, this is a relief portrait of the face of a Mayan lord, surrounded by glyph-like symbols. The figure is abstract and curvilinear, divided into blocky areas, in the classic Mayan style. Elite Mayans commissioned artwork carved in stone, bone, shell, stucco, and ceramic, and their subjects reflect this: royalty and gods, made to adorn the temples, court buildings, and bodies that these people ruled. Royal courts employed full-time painters and sculptors to create these items. Size: 1.2" W x 7.55" H (3 cm x 19.2 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex J. Leff collection, Uniontown, Pennsylvania, USA
