Description:

Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Mayan culture, Copador, ca. 550 to 900 CE. An exceptional Copador-style pottery bowl from the Mayan culture of El Salvador, dating to the Late Classic period. The vessel is skillfully formed with a rounded, globular body, thick, swollen walls, and a gently inward-curving rim that creates a harmonious, self-contained silhouette. The interior remains largely unadorned, save for a simple red ring encircling the inner rim - a subtle yet intentional design choice that draws the viewer's gaze inward. In contrast, the exterior is vividly decorated in rich red and black hues, featuring a narrow register of pseudoglyphs along the upper body. Below this, a captivating frieze of seven standing figures encircles the bowl, each rendered in profile and facing right. These figures are elaborately dressed, wearing dramatic headdresses with flowing plumage and long, ornate loincloths, suggesting their elevated status - possibly nobles, dancers, or mythological beings. Size: 8" Diameter x 5.3" H (20.3 cm x 13.5 cm)
