Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan, ca. 550 to 950 CE. Hand-carved and string-cut from a piece of beautiful greenstone of stunning light green hues, a face pendant presenting an expressive visage with a lobed coiffure, pronounced eyes, protruding nose, high cheek bones, and a broad smile - perforated behind the forehead for suspension. Scholars believe that the Mayans associated the color green with vegetation, water, and renewal. A lovely piece that stands on its own as a sculptural work but may also be worn as a pendant. Size: 1.125" H (2.9 cm); 2.875" H (7.3 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-Laurence Witten collection, Florida, USA
