Lot 93C
Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, Classic Maya, ca. 300 to 900 CE. This is an interesting piece, a small head carved from what is obviously a found piece of green stone. The head seems to be of a woman based on its elaborate hairstyle. The back has been drilled in multiple places, presumably to make this pendant attachable to clothing or jewelry. Being made of green stone, this would have been a valuable piece of art for its owner - perhaps it was a portrait of a real person. Size: 1.1" W x 0.8" H (2.8 cm x 2 cm)
Provenance: Ex-Adeon Gallery, Chicago, IL, acquired prior to 1970.
