Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 500 to 800 CE. A finely carved, medium blue-green jade pendant depicting a chief's stylized visage in profile, richly ornamented with an elaborate headdress and ear discs on the upper right. Beneath is another visage in profile, but facing right. Finally, to the left side, just beneath the perforation, is a third frontally facing visage. These other visages may represent supplicants to the chief depicted. As was the custom, the Mayan artisan worked with the natural shape of the stone rather than lose any precious surface area. The stone was drilled horizontally behind the headdress for suspension of this lovely pendant. Custom, museum-quality stand. Size: figure itself measures 2" W x 3.25" H (5.1 cm x 8.3 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on stand

Provenance: Ex-Bastian collection, acquired at Artemis Gallery in 2004
