Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, Honduras, Ulua Valley, Late Classic period, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A fine pottery cylinder vessel covered in layers of rich orange, red, and black pigment. The flat-based vessel has gently-rounded walls, a thin rim, and a deep interior cavity. Presented on the exterior is a register of two hummingbirds and two multi-petaled flowers, enclosed by a set of thin black lines and thick red-orange stripes, all atop a pale-orange ground. The hummingbirds are perhaps a reference to Huitzilopochtli, the Mayan hummingbird god of the sun, war, and human sacrifice. Size: 3.625" W x 5.5" H (9.2 cm x 14 cm).
