Pre-Columbian, Maya/Toltec, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A magnificent "plumbate" pottery jar, a distinctive style of pottery from late Classic and early Postclassic Mesoamerica. Plumbate pottery is distinguishable by its uniquely shiny - sometimes even iridescent - glaze that has been fired at very high temperatures. This piece depicts a hunchback figure kneeling on one knee, holding his hands to the large central pendant of his beaded pectoral. He also wears large earspools and double strand bracelets. On his back is a large jar that appears to be supported by his hunchback. All is finished in lustrous red and grey glaze. His expressive transformational visage may in fact represent a mask that features human as well as zoomorphic features, notably a changing mouth and twisted hornlike extensions from animal-like ears. Plumbate ware was probably made by a very small number of artisans around the Mexico/Guatemala border who then exported them throughout wider Mesoamerica. Size: 7.25" W x 7.375" H (18.4 cm x 18.7 cm)
