Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec to Maya culture, ca. 500 BCE to 900 CE. A beautiful arrangement of ancient beads made of jadeite and greenstone, all strung on a modern cord to form a necklace. The beads vary widely in shape, from discoid and tubular to irregular and barrel forms, exhibiting a range of green, gray, and earthy hues consistent with naturally occurring jadeite and other greenstones from Mesoamerica. These materials were prized by both the Olmec and Maya for their association with fertility, life force, and elite status. The assemblage likely represents components originally used as personal adornment or ritual regalia. Size of strand doubled: 20" L (50.8 cm); central large stone: 1.25" L x 0.8" W (3.2 cm x 2 cm)

.
