Description:

Near East, Mesopotamia / Syria, ca. 3500 BCE. A mottled grey stone stamp seal of ovoid form with a flattened face, engraved with a zoomorphic motif and pierced lengthwise for suspension. The central figure is a horned ibex or ram-like ungulate, accompanied by what appears to be vine-like vegetation or abstract space fillers. Included with the piece is a typewritten description signed in blue ink by "W. G. Lambert," indicating that it was examined by Professor Wilfrid George Lambert FBA (1926-2011), a renowned Assyriologist and Fellow of the British Academy specializing in Near Eastern archaeology. His description identifies the motif as "a standing horned animal, a fish, a water creature, and other items." Size: 1.5" L x 1" W (3.8 cm x 2.5 cm)
