Leonardo Linares Vargas (Mexican, 1963 to present) "Skeleton Horse Rider," papier-mache, ca. 2017. A gunslinging Catrina figure (skeleton woman) seated upon her horse, rifle across her lap and bandoliers across her chest. They are mounted on a wood base signed "Leonardo Linares / Cuidad de Mexico / 2017." Leonardo Linares Vargas is a famous cartonero (paper-mache sculptor) from the famous Linares family - descended from Pedro Linares Lopez (1906-1992), the imaginative mind behind the Alebrijes figures. Several of Leonardo Linares' pieces are part of the British Museum's collection and he was the distinguished Artist-in-residence at Museum of Mankind in 1992 during the "Skeleton at the Feast" exhibit.
