Description:

Latin America, Mexico, ca. 21st century CE. A pair of sculptural candle holders in the style of the Tree of Life sculptures, both handmade for the Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday. Pins with doves and bone shaped appliques protrude from the surface creating a sense of depth and motion. The Tree of Life is a traditional Mexican pottery sculpture used to depict the Biblical story of creation, serving as a teaching aid for indigenous people during the early colonial period. Interestingly, Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican cultures, such as the Maya, believed in an axis mundi that was embodied by a massive ceiba (kapok) tree, also known as a tree of life or the "world tree," with roots that descended into the underworld. Today the "trees" are created with any number of themes and scenes. Size: 7" L x 3.3" W x 6" H (17.8 cm x 8.4 cm x 15.2 cm)
