Description:

Latin America, Northern Mexico, Tarahumara (Raramuri) culture, ca. late 19th to mid-20th century CE. A drum, constructed from stretched hide pulled taut over a rounded wooden frame, with both drum faces securely laced together using sinew cord. The hide surfaces are painted in a sunburst motif, featuring triangles in green, red, pink, and blue radiating from a central circle. A pink wire loop affixed to the rim serves for suspension, though it can easily be replaced with a more traditional or natural cord. One face bears a faint penciled inscription at the center, now indiscernible with age. An attached cotton cord is tied to a fragmentary wooden beater stick, but a complete beater stick with a cloth-wrapped head is included for continued use or display. The drum still produces a strong, resonant percussive sound, making it not only a collectible artifact but also a functional instrument. Size: 18" Diameter x 3.5" W (45.7 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Denver, Colorado, USA collection, acquired in the 1960's
