Lot 3
Pre-Columbian, Guerrero, Mexico, Mezcala culture, ca. 500 BCE to 100 BCE. A rare and evocative Mezcala carved stone temple model, fashioned from grey stone into a schematic architectural form with a central sanctuary figure. The structure is represented in stylized abstraction, with a rectangular facade, stepped roofline, and a central recessed niche framing a standing idol-like figure. This figure, with simplified geometric head and body, embodies the essence of Mezcala abstraction, in which human and architectural forms were rendered in powerful minimalist lines. Mezcala stone temple models are among the most distinctive works of the Guerrero tradition, believed to have been offerings placed in tombs and sacred contexts. Their abstract rendering of ritual architecture may have symbolized the connection between the terrestrial and divine realms, providing the deceased with access to protective deities or sacred spaces in the afterlife. Size: 5.4" W x 6.4" H (13.7 cm x 16.3 cm); 6.9" H (17.5 cm) on included custom stand.
The reduction of form to geometric planes and incised lines anticipates later Mesoamerican design vocabularies, reflecting a highly sophisticated artistic vision. This example retains a strong presence with weathered surfaces consistent with age, its form still clearly communicating the iconic combination of temple and divine figure. Such works were admired and collected for their stark modernity, and they remain among the most compelling Pre-Columbian stone traditions.
