Michael C. Poulsen (American, b. 1952). "Teton Early Morning Glory" hand painted with oils on limited edition giclee on canvas, 1999. Edition 3 of 20. Signed and numbered lower left. Title, medium, date, and signature on verso. In a word, SUBLIME! A hand-painted, limited edition giclee on canvas depicting a sweeping view of the Tetons in Wyoming by legendary Western artist M. C. Poulsen. According to Poulsen, only 20 works were in this sold-out series, and he hand-painted each one with oils in a completely unique way, with a distinct color palette and variations on the compositions. In Poulsen's words, "I may as well have been doing a complete original on a blank canvas, because I completely changed them. Each one was a unique piece." Poulsen applies numerous translucent layers of pigment to his paintings and embraces the contrasts between warm and cool tones. Realism is important to him, and he creates many sketches and photos to ensure views true to nature. Also of note, in our conversation, Poulsen pointed out how his approach to the scene differed from other artists, "Most paintings of the Tetons are done where the water comes down from left to right, and I did mine to where if you walk up closer from that view you cut off that part of the tributary that flows to the right. It goes to the left and then comes back to the right with a hard right. So the composition is a little different from what typically is done by others." A very special piece by M. C. Poulsen, mounted in an exquisite custom frame that complements it perfectly. Size (artwork): 24" L x 36" W (61 cm x 91.4 cm) Size (frame): 34.625" L x 46.25" W (87.9 cm x 117.5 cm)
About the Artist: "Michael Charles Poulsen moved to Cody, Wyoming when he was thirteen to work on his parents' 15,000-acre cattle ranch. After serving in the Marine Corps, he studied art at Arizona State University in Tempe, then dropped out to study with his neighbor and renown Western artist James Bama.
His love for art and the West evolved from working and painting the people he met and the scenes he observed throughout the years. Early in his painting career, Poulsen painted landscapes, still lives and figurative scenes, but after he discovered Western paintings by Charles M. Russell, he decided to focus on Western Art. Poulsen exhibited a one-man show at the Capitol Rotunda in July of 1992 in Washington, D.C. and was the first American Western artist to exhibit in Russia as part of a cultural exchange.
Poulsen's art career has spanned over 45 years. He participates annually in shows and exhibitions across the country, including those held by the Autry National Center in Los Angeles, California; the Gilcrease Museum in Tulsa, Oklahoma; the Buffalo Bill Center of the Werst in Cody, Wyoming; the C.M. Russell Museum in Great Falls, Montana; the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Indiana.
His work is featured in galleries in New Mexico, Wyoming, Utah, California, and Arizona.
His portraiture work has led him to commissions for the Pentagon, The John Hopkins Hospital, The Smithsonian Native American Museum, LDS Church Museum, Brigham Young University Museum as well as numerous private commissions from prominent figures across the United States.
Inspiration is what Mike Poulsen's art and life are all about. Revealed in his paintings is a sensitivity, honesty and accuracy born of uncommon experience with a lust for life.
Poulsen continues to live and paint in Cody, Wyoming, where he and his wife have built their home on some of the original acreage owned by his family ranch." (source: M.C. Poulsen Art Studio)
