Description:

Pre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Michoacan, ca. 300 BCE to 300 CE. Intriguing pair, starting with nice sized Michoacan grater bowl with beautifully painted decoration in red and cream and deeply incised cross-hatching in the center. The bowl sits on three conical legs. Next we have an unusual form created by the ancients of Costa Rica. Most notable is the human effigy handle with rattles inside. The representation is likely a shaman engaged in a trance or transformative state with his wide eyes and grand headdress. 6 3/4" across x 3 1/4"T (grater bowl) and 7"D with 6"handle (effigy form)

Provenance: Ex-Gilbert Martin Collection, Georgia, USA

  • Condition: Fantastic root markings on Costa Rican piece. Handle reattached but appears in very good condition. Grater bowl shows expected surface wear. Else intact and excellent.
