Description:

North America, Central/Southern Plains, Plains Indians, ca. second half of the 19th to early 20th century CE. A wonderful example of a Plains Indian warrior lance with a lengthy wooden pole that curves gently along the lower half. The narrow trade steel blade has sharpened edges that taper to a point as well as a pair of perforated circles just above two lateral attachment prongs. The top of the wooden pole is accentuated with red ochre pigment, and two early 20th century beaded leather bands are displayed on the upper body with either a tuft of dyed horsehair or several black bird feathers. Lances like this example could strike enemy warriors from a distance and were incredibly dangerous when wielded by groups of fellow warriors. Size: 1.4" W x 86" H (3.6 cm x 218.4 cm); (blade): 9.625" L (24.4 cm).
