**Originally Listed At $350**
Central Africa, Congo Region, Ngbaka people, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. A bold and sculptural figural harp from the Ngbaka people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, carved in wood and clad with iron sheeting. The instrument is conceived in an abstract, geometric form, the rectangular sound box rising into a stylized human head with softly modeled features. The planes of the face are pared down to their essentials - brow, nose, and chin reduced to powerful volumes that emphasize presence over portraiture. The box itself is partially encased in hammered iron plates, secured with rows of rivets, which lend a striking visual rhythm and suggest both protection and sacred potency. Faint traces of red pigment linger across the metal and wood surfaces, a reminder of the instrument's original vibrancy and ritual use. Among the Ngbaka, harps such as this are known as ngombi and are traditionally employed in both entertainment and ritual contexts, their music believed to mediate between the human and spirit worlds. Size: 5.1" L x 6.3" W x 18.5" H (13 cm x 16 cm x 47 cm)
The stark rectilinear geometry and minimal facial expression reflect a mid-20th century aesthetic that bridges older traditions with later, more abstract artistic interpretations. This example, with its riveted iron cladding and monumental proportions, epitomizes the enduring creativity of Central African instrument-making in the 20th century.
