Native American, Pacific Northwest, Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwakiutl) people, ca. mid 20th century CE. A "menatse," the Kwakwaka'wakw word for drum, made of hide stretched over a round wooden frame, forming a hoop drum. The hide is held in place with leather straps and the wood is blonde. One face of the drum is painted with a classic Pacific Northwest depiction of a thunderbird transformation mask, portrayed facing forward, staring directly at the viewer, and with eight profiled bird heads radiating from it - and delineated in vibrant black, red, green, and white hues. Drums, as with many instruments in this tradition, are linked with shamanic practices - used to mark the start and end of a ceremony, and, sometimes, to indicate the presence of spirits. Size: 16.5" in diameter x 3.25" H (41.9 cm x 8.3 cm)
