Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. 1940s CE. A handmade cutting tool, known as an adze, featuring a long wooden handle in shades of light brown with a black stone blade presenting a perpendicular cutting edge. The smoothly carved handle tapers to a point at its base and dramatically curves near its blade head, which is attached via densely-wrapped rattan fibers that cover the majority of the body. Opposite where the handle curves to attach to the head, the finely carved stone blade peaks out from the tan fibers, displaying a horizontal sharp edge. Size: 12.3" W x 19.125" H (31.2 cm x 48.6 cm)
