Description:

Oceania, Papua New Guinea, Middle Ramu and Upper Keram River Basin, near Guam River entry, Misingi Village, Romkun culture, ca. mid-20th century CE. A male initiation figure with opposed hooks framing a large stylized avian face that comprises the head. The minimalist body has a slender midsection, lengthy legs with conical feet, and thin arms held to the bulbous hips. Throughout Papua New Guinea, several groups of people worked in what is known as the 'opposed-hooks' style to adorn sacred figures, in which curved and pointed hooks are arranged on a vertical axis around a central design element. Size: 2.875" W x 27.125" H (7.3 cm x 68.9 cm); 27.25" H (69.2 cm) on included custom stand.
