Description:

Central Asia, Persia, ca. mid-20th century CE. A refined Persian silver drinking set comprised of six conical cups and a matching serving tray, each crafted in 85.4% silver and adorned with delicate hand-engraved decoration. The vessels display elegant tapering walls with gently flared rims, their exteriors worked in intricate arabesques and floral motifs arranged in symmetrical medallions and scrolling vine patterns, characteristic of Persian silverwork of the period. The engraving is rendered with remarkable precision, creating surfaces that catch and reflect the light with quiet brilliance. The rectangular tray, with chamfered ends and raised rim, is decorated en suite, its surface densely patterned with scrolling vegetal motifs within defined borders, echoing the ornament of the cups. Together, tray and cups form a harmonious ensemble designed for serving tea or spirits, reflecting the enduring importance of communal hospitality in Persian culture. Size of largest (tray): 10.4" L x 3.4" W (26.4 cm x 8.6 cm); silver quality: 85.4%; weight: 365.3 grams

Mid-20th century silver of this quality demonstrates both continuity and innovation: while maintaining classical Persian ornamental traditions rooted in Safavid design, silversmiths of the era increasingly catered to both local and international collectors who admired the refinement of Iranian metalwork. This set, with its balance of form, function, and decorative refinement, embodies the artistry of modern Persian silversmiths who continued to uphold centuries of tradition while adapting to a modern age of collecting and display.
