Description:

Northern Europe, Scandinavia, Viking, ca. 10th century CE. A fine example of a forged-iron broad sword bearing a double-edged blade with a straight profile and no fuller. The uniform blade tapers until terminating at a pointed tip and has a bulbous rectangular hand guard surmounting the top of the shoulder. The handle features a narrow profile meant to accommodate a single hand - presumably whilst the other wielded a shield - and the stocky pommel exhibits a trio of rounded lobes protruding from an ovoid bottom section. Size: 37" L x 3.875" W (94 cm x 9.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
