Description:

European watercolor on very thin sheet of ivory, 19th century. Signature at lower right. Inscription on verso. A miniature watercolor painting on a very thin sheet of ivory of the Romanticism era depicting a Moor on horseback traversing rocky terrain. During the early 18th century, miniature painters began to replace vellum with ivory, as some artists favored its luminosity when depicting flesh tones and capturing three dimensions; ivory was used for miniature paintings through the end of the 19th century, and it was usually made extremely thin, resulting in a lovely translucent quality. A lovely example of this artform mounted behind glass in an attractive wooden frame with a gilded brass decorative molding. Size (sight view): 4" L x 2.75" W (10.2 cm x 7 cm) Size (frame): 6.375" L x 5.125" W (16.2 cm x 13 cm)

  • Condition: Painting is mounted under glass in a wooden frame. The painting has adhered to the glass but is otherwise in very nice condition with vivid imagery and hues. The verso of the painting has been tested via XRF to confirm that it was painted on ivory. There is a signature at the lower right and an inscription on a board behind the verso, but they are difficult to decipher. Frame has minor scuffs and abrasions and two nail holes on the verso as shown. Otherwise, frame is very nice and fit with a suspension loop.
