Lot 145
Pre-Columbian, Quimbaya culture, Ecuador or Colombia, ca. 400 to 1000 CE. This is a cute hollow pottery figure, standing, with hands on hips, obvious genitalia, and finely rendered feet and toes. He stands with hands on hips and feet planted wide apart. The face is charming, with slits for eyes and mouth and a prominent, bulbous nose with open nostrils; he has a golden ring through his nose. The grooves around his arms and waist may also be evidence for missing gold bands and the drilled holes at his shoulders may have had other decorative details attached like feathers or string. He is known as a slab figure, made to be placed with burials in shaft and chamber tombs, perhaps as guardians or companions for the deceased. Size: 4.25" W x 5.2" H (10.8 cm x 13.2 cm)
