The bust-length oval portrait depicts Hampden in profile with his head turned and eyes gazing out at the viewer. A finely rendered miniature oval portrait of an important British patriot mounted behind glass in an old (albeit later than the portrait) frame from Philip Suval Pictures and Frames on Madison Avenue in New York City. Size (portrait): 3.5" L x 2.75" W (8.9 cm x 7 cm) Size (frame): 5.875" L x 5.25" W (14.9 cm x 13.3 cm)
More about the sitter: John Hampden was best known for his opposition to taxes imposed by King Charles I. He was one of the five members of Parliament who attempted arrest in January 1642; their actions would inspire a civil war between the Parliamentarians and the Royalists which began in August 1642. Sadly, Hampden was mortally wounded during the Battle of Chalgrove Field on June 18, 1643. Hampden was an ally to Parliamentary leader John Pym as well as first cousin to Oliver Cromwell who would become Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England Scotland, and Ireland following the defeat of King Charles I in the Civil War. Hampden was educated at Oxford University and was thought to be one of a select few who had the power to bring the various factions of the Parliamentarian party together.
