Description:

Anonymous (British, 18th century). "Thomas Tanner" pencil and watercolor on paper, n.d. Title on verso. A fine portrait of Thomas Tanner (English, 1674-1735) depicted in watercolor and pencil and shown in profile, facing left. Wearing a black jacket and white shirt, the sitter features a prominent, pointed nose, deep-set eyes, slender lips, and sagging jowls. The cross-hatched background adds shadow and depth to the composition. Though the exact identity of the sitter is unknown, this may represent an English antiquary and prelate that served as Bishop of St. Asaph from 1732 to 1735. Size of image: 2.8" W x 3.3" H (7.1 cm x 8.4 cm); of frame: 4.6" W x 6.25" H (11.7 cm x 15.9 cm)
