Lot 206B
Europe, ca. 18th century CE. A warm, human tenderness radiates from this intimate 18th century portrait, the young sitter rendered with a softness that glows gently through time. Painted in oil on copper, the work displays a clarity and depth of color characteristic of the medium, where the metallic surface heightens the luminous modeling of the face and the subtle play of light across the sitter's hair and garments. The oval composition presents a youth with calm, steady eyes, framed by softly curling hair and dressed in a white chemise beneath a red drape. The artist has shaped the features with delicate transitions of tone, achieving a quiet immediacy that recalls the private miniature traditions of the period. Copper panels were especially favored for such intimate works, prized for their durability and their ability to hold fine detail without the cracking associated with wood. Size of painting: 3.25" W x 4" H (8.3 cm x 10.2 cm); of frame: 3.4" W x 4.3" H (8.6 cm x 10.9 cm)
The portrait is housed in its original gilt copper frame, an elegant oval with a mellow, timeworn patina that complements the painting's warmth. The reverse retains early mounting tabs and surface wear consistent with age and long domestic display. As both painting and object, this miniature carries the quiet charm of personal devotion and the craftsmanship of European portrait traditions at the close of the early modern period. It stands today as a small but eloquent testament to the art of looking closely and remembering well.
