Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, possibly Malaysia / Borneo, ca. 1940s. A finely carved and painted miniature shield featuring a copulating couple in high relief against a background with impressively painted chocolate brown, golden yellow, and white, curvilinear, interlaced designs. The larger figure's headdress is elaborately carved with curled, hornlike motifs that are painted red and white. His legs display nice sinuous tattoos and concentric, ring-like tattoos surrounding his ankles. He and his partner are perched upon a small pedestal of curved, red and white, relief forms similar to those of the headdress. On the verso is a carved handle and a penciled design, perhaps indicating that this side is unfinished. Still wonderful to see the artisan's technique in process! A wonderful piece, rare for its size, erotic iconography, and impressive workmanship. Size: 2.5" W x 11.5" H (6.4 cm x 29.2 cm)
