Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Chorrera culture, ca. 500 BCE. An ancient pipe made for the ritual consumption of hallucinogenic drugs as part of a shamanic ceremony. The pipe's bowl is in the form of a broad-faced anthropomorphic figure, perhaps a warrior based on what looks like a helmet he wears. The long body of the pipe projects backward from where the figure's neck would have been. The helmet is red, the face yellow, and the pipe itself a lavenderish-grey. Size: 4.25" L x 2.25" W x 2.2" H (10.8 cm x 5.7 cm x 5.6 cm)

Provenance: private New York, USA collection, acquired from the Fernandez Leventhal Gallery
