Description:

Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A miniature votive amulet carved from cow or ox bone depicting a seated baboon with hands placed neatly upon its bent knees. The baboon is representative of Thoth, the god of intellectual pursuits like writing and accounting, who typically exhibits an ibis-headed form in Egyptian mythology. The simian figure peers forward with petite eyes and has a thick snout, a slightly rounded brow, and large tufts of fur protruding laterally from the head. A delicate and miniscule example of fine Egyptian funerary artistry! Size: 0.3" W x 0.875" H (0.8 cm x 2.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, acquired before 2000
