Description:

Ancient Egypt, Late Dynastic to Ptolemaic Period, ca. 664 to 30 BCE. A miniature faience pendant or earring depicting Harpocrates (literally "Horus the child") seated upon a flower or branch, all covered in turquoise-hued glaze. The nude deity holds his finger to his mouth in his signature gesture of silence or secret-keeping while holding a slender cornucopia in his other arm. A modern gold wire loop is housed within the integral suspension loop for wearability. Size: 0.27" L x 0.54" W x 0.62" H (0.7 cm x 1.4 cm x 1.6 cm)

Son of Isis and Osiris, Harpokrates was the Egyptian child god Horus, who avenged his father's death through several battles with Seth, the legendary god of Chaos. He represented the newborn sun, rising each day at dawn and was depicted as a nude boy with his finger to his mouth, as realization of the hieroglyph for "child," as seen in this example. Misunderstanding this gesture, the later Greeks and Roman poets made Harpocrates the god of silence and secrecy.
