Description:

Ancient Egypt, Ptolemaic period, ca. 332 to 30 BCE. A striking leaded bronze situla cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, with a rolled rim, a piriform body, and a gently mammiform base. A pair of petite annular suspension loops flank the rim, to which a slender handle is attached, rising high above the elegant vessel, while its tapered ends curl upwards in a serpentine manner. Please note that Lucite stand is for photography purposes only. Size: 0.875" in diameter x 3.25" H (2.2 cm x 8.3 cm)

In Egypt, the situla form was made for holding and carrying holy liquids during religious rituals; the form was used for other purposes in classical Greece. Some have been found that were later used to hold ashes, or were buried with offerings in tombs.
