Description:

Greece, Geometric Period, ca. 8th century BCE. A charming miniature horse bead, fashioned from leaded bronze, captures a stylized yet dignified steed. Supported by four small, nubbin legs, the figure features a thick neck that curves dramatically upward, culminating in an oversized head with projecting ears, recessed eyes, and a round nose. Incised dashes along the neck suggest the animal's mane, while four stamped target motifs provide textural detail to its body. A petite tail extends from the rear, and a vertical drilled hole allows this endearing piece to be worn as a bead or pendant on a necklace. Size: 0.7" W x 0.6" H (1.8 cm x 1.5 cm)

During the Geometric Period of ancient Greece (c. 900-700 BCE), horses were a frequently depicted motif in art, particularly on pottery and as small bronze figurines. These representations were highly stylized, characterized by simplified, often angular forms and an emphasis on linear patterns. Horses were typically portrayed with slender bodies, long necks, and schematic details, fitting within the overall abstract and decorative aesthetic of the era. Their presence likely reflected the animal's growing importance in warfare and status during this formative period of Greek civilization.
