Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 1150 to 500 BCE. An expertly carved, miniature green jadeite statuette depicting a standing figure carved in the round from jadeite of brilliant blue-green hues, with broad shoulders, arms slightly extended before him, hands meeting one another before the chest, and a visage that presents a characteristically elongated head with slightly slanted eyes, a relatively naturalistic nose, a characteristically Olmec jowly "babyface" visage with a downturned open jaguar-like mouth. Scholars have proposed that the flattened and elongated heads of these figures are indicative of the artificial cranial deformation practiced by the Olmec. An exemplar of Olmec sculpture, impressive for its technique, iconography, and well as the inherent beauty of the jade. A superb sculptural work from the Olmec, indeed the first Mesoamerican civilization that most regard as the forerunner of subsequent ancient American cultures such as the Maya and Aztecs! Size: 1.875" H (4.8 cm)
