Description:

Egypt, Romano-Egyptian Period, ca. 30 BCE to 2nd century CE. An intriguing miniature figurine of Harpocrates (Her-pa-khered, literally "Horus the child") seated nude atop an integral plinth. Carved from cow or ox bone, Harpocrates sits with bent legs and with both hands supports his enormous phallus as it drapes over his right shoulder and behind his neck. His face stares outwards with enormous ovoid eyes and exhibits full lips, fleshy cheeks, a bulbous nose, and a rounded chin. Harpocrates was the god of silence, secrets, and confidentiality, and ithyphallic representations of him were perceived in the Romano-Egyptian period as apotropaic charms specifically for bringing about good fortune. Size: 0.55" W x 1.1" H (1.4 cm x 2.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Phoenicia Holyland Antiquities, New York, New York, USA; ex-private Mr. Khabbazi collection, acquired in November 1992
