Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A wonderful pair of molded terracotta vessels of a miniature form. Both vessels have bodies depicting a visage of an elder dignitary with wrinkled cheeks, recessed eyes, prominent noses, broad ears, and wide foreheads, with funnel spouts on top. One vessel rests upon a concave foot, and the other upon a stable base. Vessels like these were typically used to store snuff, lime powder, or other precious hallucinogenic substances. Highly-burnished and colored with a deep red slip, this is an exceptionally rare set of miniature pottery vessels! Size of largest (footed base): 2.25" W x 2.7" H (5.7 cm x 6.9 cm).
