Description:

Native American, Mississippian culture, Arkansas, St. Francis County, Big Eddy site, ca. 1200 to 1600 CE. A commanding and tactile example of Late Mississippian ceramic tradition, this large Parkin Punctate cooking jar embodies the strength and utility of the Neeley's Ferry form at an impressive scale. Hand-built in earthenware, the vessel presents a full, globular body rising to a broad, open mouth with a thickened rim. The overall silhouette corresponds to the well-documented Neeley's Ferry form, characterized by its rounded body and practical, wide orifice suited for cooking and storage. Quarterly placed around the shoulder are four substantial strap handles, evenly spaced and firmly integrated into the wall of the jar. Each handle is pierced to allow suspension or lifting, reinforcing the vessel's role in daily culinary life. Size: 9.5" Diameter x 8.5" H (24.1 cm x 21.6 cm)

Both the body and the handles are richly adorned with Parkin Punctate decoration. Dense, closely spaced punctations cover the lower body in organized fields, creating a textured surface that is as functional as it is visually striking. The strap handles themselves are similarly embellished, their surfaces continuing the punctate treatment so that decoration and structure operate as a unified whole. This allover texturing likely improved grip while also signaling cultural identity within the Parkin phase ceramic tradition of eastern Arkansas.

This particular jar carries exceptional historical importance. It was published in Roy Hathcock's "Ancient Indian Pottery of the Mississippi River Valley" as an illustrated example of Parkin Punctate, and was formerly owned by Hathcock himself. The vessel was reportedly found by Glenn Barnes in 1955 at the Big Eddy site in St. Francis County, Arkansas, USA, a significant Mississippian context in the Mississippi River Valley. Large, published, and securely attributed, this Neeley's Ferry Parkin Punctate cooking jar stands as a remarkable document of Mississippian craftsmanship and Arkansas archaeological history.

This piece was published in "Ancient Indian Pottery of the Mississippi River Valley" by Roy Hathcock (Camden, AR.: Hurley Press, Inc., 1976) on page 19, #11.
