Description:

Native American, Mound Builders, Mississippian, ca. 900 to 1500 CE. A beautifully worn Mississippian chunkey stone, carved as a plano-convex discoidal with a smooth domed profile and flattened base. The surface displays a striking mottled patterning, with pale mineral inclusions scattered across a dark ground, giving the stone a naturally graphic appearance. Chunkey stones were used in the widely played Mississippian game of chunkey, in which a rolling stone was paired with spears or poles in a contest of skill, timing, and social prestige. Compact, sculptural, and tactile, this example offers a direct connection to one of the most iconic athletic and ceremonial traditions of the Mississippian world. Size: 2.1" Diameter x 0.8" H (5.3 cm x 2 cm); custom display case: 4.3" L x 4.3" W (10.9 cm x 10.9 cm)
