Native American, Southeastern United States, Mississippian culture., ca. 900 - 1500 CE. A striking and intact Mississippian pottery jar distinguished by bold ribbed surface modeling that wraps around the rounded body in sweeping, high relief bands. The orange clay vessel is shell tempered, a hallmark of Mississippian ceramic technology that strengthened the clay while allowing potters to achieve thinner walls and durable forms. The vessel's exterior is decorated with a repeating geometric pattern created by deeply carved ridges that curve across the surface in rhythmic arcs. These raised lines form a striking sculptural texture that catches light and shadow across the body of the pot, emphasizing its rounded profile. On the underside, the ribbing converges to form a square geometric motif, demonstrating careful planning in the vessel's overall design.
