Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec culture, Rio Balsas, ca. 1250 CE. This is a raised elaborate tripod vessel with an incised pattern in tondo. It is well decorated with lavish sea life motifs and geometric and floral patterns around the interior of the bowl. The tripod feet are paws, calling to mind a jaguar. The sea life motifs are interesting, given that most of the Mixtec landscape was dominated by high mountains. Perhaps the bowl was used to serve seafood during feasts. Size: 8.25" W x 4" H (21 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Private Poway CA collection.
