Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Mixtec people, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. A lovely necklace comprised of 11 miniature pottery figural beads alternating with 10 pottery beads of long, twisted rope-like shapes. The central pendant bead is the largest figure, presenting as an abstract anthropomorph standing with outstretched limbs, a nude body revealing male genitalia, and looking out at the viewer with delineated facial features, a tall headdress, and large earspools. The more petite accompanying figural beads also stand - some with outstretched limbs and others with arms across the chest - and face forward with stylized countenances and pronounced headdresses. A fascinating necklace from the Mixtec peoples of the Americas. Size (necklace): 29.5" L (74.9 cm); (central figure): 1" W x 1.7" H (2.5 cm x 4.3 cm)

Provenance: private Arcadia, California, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
