Description:

Pre-Columbian, Post Classic Maya, Mixtec, modern day Mexico, ca. 1200 to 1500 CE. An attractive platter standing on three strap-like legs with geometric iconography around its visible surfaces. Maze-like motifs in orange and black overpainted on a thin taupe slip surround a largely undecorated area with a starfish-like pattern around a spiral at the center. Five evenly-spaced, drilled holes around the starfish motif allow the plate to drain liquid. Size: 10.2" W x 3.3" H (25.9 cm x 8.4 cm)

At excavations in this region, archaeologists have found more polychrome pottery in commoner's residences than in elite ones - particularly ones like this, with geometric designs.
