Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Mixtec or Tarascan culture, ca. 900 to 1200 CE. A hand-built redware pipe, before the bowl is a abstract zoomorph head, perhaps symbolizing a canid such as a dog or coyote, with applied spirals along the sides. Smoking pipes played an important role in Mesoamerican society. In addition to tobacco, and often prior to it, we know from ethnohistorical accounts that people smoked a variety of other plants, including dogwood, juniper, sumac, and bearberry.
