Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Oaxaca, Guerrero, or Puebla, Mixtec, Post Classic, ca. 1200 to 1520 CE. Finely carved and string cut from an attractive greenstone, the head of a penate with a nicely detailed visage comprised of coffee bean shaped eyes, a wide nose with partially pierced nostrils, a pronounced mouth with slightly downturned full lips, and a grand headdress and/or coiffure. The Mixtecos created small sculptures called penates to represent family ancestors. According to scholar Michael Lind who wrote "Arqueologia de la Mixteca" (2008), penates were associated with the houses of nobles. Some were worn as pendants on necklaces as a symbol of the person's royal lineage. Block stand. Size: 1.375" W x 1.75" H (3.5 cm x 4.4 cm)
