Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase IV, ca. 500 to 700 CE. An evocative pottery stirrup vessel shaped as a finely modeled portrait head, likely depicting a high-ranking Moche lord. Remarkable naturalism defines the face, which features open eyes and a calm, neutral expression. Particularly striking are the prominently projecting earspools that extend well beyond the ears concealed beneath an elaborate headdress. Crowning the headdress is a highly raised annular ornament, while its surface is painted with an abstract motif resembling a hacha - a ceremonial axe blade significant in Moche symbolism. Intricate incised details contribute to the vessel's rich visual narrative, including carefully defined eyebrows, subtle lip lines, an insect motif on the chin, and stepped patterns adorning the neck. These embellishments enhance both the artistic sophistication and symbolic depth of the piece. Size: 8" L x 6.3" W x 10.1" H (20.3 cm x 16 cm x 25.7 cm)

Among ancient cultures of the Americas, the Moche civilization of northern Peru stands out for its production of true ceramic portraiture. Beyond their exceptional craftsmanship, such vessels serve as valuable historical documents. Scholars have even been able to track the aging and social advancement of certain individuals across multiple portrait vessels, offering unique insight into Moche identity and hierarchy.
