Description:

**Originally Listed At $300**

Pre-Columbian, Peru, North Coast, Moche culture, ca. 100 to 700 CE. A finely crafted Moche copper chisel, its elongated rectangular form tapering gently to a split cutting edge, the surface now covered in a brilliant emerald-green patina from centuries of age and burial. The tool was cold-hammered from a single copper sheet, its upper portion flattened for secure hafting into a wooden or bone handle, while the lower end forms a narrow bifurcated blade used for carving or working wood and stone. The Moche were among the earliest Andean cultures to master copper metallurgy, producing both functional tools and elaborate ritual objects that reflected a deep understanding of form, material, and symbolic power. Implements such as this would have been indispensable in the workshops that produced the refined ceramics, gold ornaments, and architectural reliefs that define Moche artistic achievement. Size: 8.8" L x 1.5" W (22.4 cm x 3.8 cm)

The chisel's simplicity belies its cultural importance: metal tools not only revolutionized production but also held ritual value, linking craftsmanship with sacred creation. The luminous patina, a natural transformation of the copper surface, now lends the piece an otherworldly beauty - a relic of both artistry and utility from one of ancient Peru's most innovative civilizations.
