Description:

Loma Negra., ca. 100 BCE - 100 CE. Large sheet gold and silver nose ornament, relief decoration depicting two stylized jaguars sitting in presentation, head turned to the front, long curled tails, large eyes and toothy mouths. Outer beaded double row border. One half of ornament is of gold, while the other half is silver. This technique, developed by the Mochica, represented the principle of duality and the sun and moon, shown in much of Mochica art and was taken from the earlier influence of the Chavin culture. Custom metal base. A classic and beautiful example. XRF analysis: Gold side: Gold: 18.1K Gold: 75.68% Silver: 22.01% Copper: 1.91% Iron: 0.41% Silver side: Gold: 10.3K Gold: 43.31% Silver: 52.55% Copper: 3.78% Iron 0.35%. Size: 4.5”L x 4”H (11.4 x 10.2cm).

Provenance: Private American collection. Ex. Mattias Komor Gallery, NYC., acquired by owner 1979. With Komor label affixed on the reverse. XRF tested with copy of report available.
