Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A wonderful and finely detailed stirrup vessel depicting a seated male, perhaps a noble based on the dignified pose and stern expression. The man sits with legs folded underneath a short skirt, has one knee studded with ritual scarification nodules, and holds his right hand to his left shoulder. The head is raised and peers towards the skies above with almond-shaped eyes, and a broad headband bearing remains of red pigment wraps around the incised coiffure. A stirrup-shaped handle projects from the verso and has a cylindrical spout with a splayed lip on top. Size: 4.2" W x 6.75" H (10.7 cm x 17.1 cm)
