Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche IV, ca. 200 to 500 CE. A large, flat-bottomed, globular bichrome terracotta stirrup vessel with twin projecting spouts and a thin handle arching between them. The body displays wonderful fine-line painted russet-brown diamond, tendril-form, and dot-shaped motifs on a cream ground. Two triangles meet at the hypotenuse on either half of the body, and an abstract representation of the chief Mochica deity Ai-Apaec protrude from either exterior point. Pieces like this were often created for holding sacred fermented liquids used in ceremonies or placed in graves as offerings. Rare in composition and artistry, this beautiful example is rather impressive for its unusual form as well as its painted decorative program. Size: 6.25" H (15.9 cm).
